Anyone ever heard of a Philco Tropic 3214 Portable?
#1

Just got one from a radio meet--and it's pretty well beat up, but I can't find any info on it. I do know it was made for export.

It's a three way portable and it's cabinet is similar to the leather-covered 53-658. Except this one has two shortwave bands along with the AM band. Also has a telescopic SW antenna.

I found a pic somewhere on the net, so this is what it looks like.

Does anyone have access to a schematic on this one?

Hello Batterymaker. Have you checked with Dave Cantelon at: http://www.justradios.com in Canada? He has schematics for lots of export models. Nice Set!! Enjoy your Philco Tropic!! I have a Fada Tropic (bakelite), & love it!

Hi Bill

I think I have the schematic for that set around here somewhere...no guarantees though. I believe it is in the 1953 Philco Home Radio Yearbook?

Hey Bill,
You might try something like the discussion forum at http://www.vintage-radio.com in the UK. It seems sometimes they have the export model schematics that we don't.

Got the schematic from someone on ARF. Unfortunately, it's water-damaged, but I'm trying to clean the image up. Did restring the dial with the info, though, so that's a small success.... Icon_smile

More good news. I went ahead and installed a round of tubes (it had been picked clean before I purchased it), hitched it onto a battery and it plays--weakly, but it does pass a signal. So, despite a couple of kludged repairs and electrical damage, the radio has promise.

Once that's tackled, I aim to have the leather re-done. Oughta be a stunner when it's all done.
