40-180 Re-Cap questions
#1

I'm preparing to order new caps for my 40-180 project and need to clarify what the appropriate replacement caps should be.

Of the two electrolytics, I'm sure I can replace the 16uf with a 22uf but what about the 12uf? The closest is either 10uf or 22uf. I suppose I could tie a 2.2 and a 10 together. Suggestions?

There are a few silver mica's that are 1250 and 5300pf. I can replace the 1250pf with a 1500pf but what about the 5300pf?

Is there a list of typical replacement cap values for this or similar models. Most of the data I found on Philco repair bench is for older models.

I'll be ordering metalized film for all the tubulars and silver mica's for the mica and silver mica. I've found ones in the 450 to 630V range.

Thanks!

You could do the 12 with a 15uf here is a link http://www.justradios.com/capacitors.html and use a 20uf for the 16. I would just use all 630V since there is not a lot of price difference. With the 1250 your could go 1200 or 1350pf and the 5300 you may have to go with a 5000 + the closest for the total. But if you figure 10% then 5000 + 10% would be 5500pf so if the 5350 was 10% on the low side it would be under 5000pf, tough call on that one.

From what I heard the old rule of thumb is meet or exceed the capacitance, especially the larger ones. I've been using 22 mf's to replace anywhere from 12 mf on up. I had a simular radio like yours, used 2 22mf's as replacements for each. Works great.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.

Do you think it's ok to replace the 1250pf and 5300pf mica's with high voltage (1K) ceramic disks? I found those in values much closer, 1200pf and 5600pf respectively. The only difference I can see is in the tolerance. The mica's are about 5% and the ceramics are 10%. I can't think of a reason why not.

Gary: I grew up in EG. I was a member of the EGARC for a *long* time back in the 70's and 80's.
