I am working on restoring a Philco 89B Cathedral. The chassis is marked code 123. But this set uses a type 36 converter, and not a 77! The tube chart on the cabinet also says type 36. Even more weird, this set has a bandswitch, BUT it is only two position and does NOT have the power switch. The power switch is on the volume control.

I have the service notes for the model 89 as well as the 89 Code 123. I have also read through all the changes in Riders.

There must have been some runs or changes not documented!

Makes it a bit difficult. At least this is the ONLY 89/19/32 I have seen with all the COILS GOOD!

On another note, the tube chart calls for GLOBE 44's, 80, and 42! I have NEVER seen a globe 42 or 44.

I've learned a little more, but I'm still not clear on what to do with this radio. My 89 code 123 (with the type 36 tube rather than 77) originally came with the bandswitch and associated wiring REMOVED. In its place, someone had installed a volume pot with switch - only the switch was used - the original Philco volume control (33-5007) was still in place. I suppose the power switch had failed and some service person got creative!

I also have an 89 code 123 parts chassis. That chassis had a bandswitch, Philco part number 42-1040-Y, which is only a TWO POSITION switch with no power switch function. This set had a non-original volume control with switch as in the model 89 code 121.

Could this combination be legit (bandswitch without power switch and separate volume control with switch)? I'm thinking it's possible since code 121 had a volume control with switch and no bandswitch, and code 123 had a bandswitch with a power switch function - 3 positions. I already know my set is EARLY code 123, thanks to this forum. So perhaps there was a transition from code 121 to code 123 that my parts chassis represents.

So I am not clear on which direction to go with this restoration.

Of course what I would like to do is get a CORRECT bandswitch, Philco part 42-1002, 42-1016, or possibly 42-1017 (used in the model 32) and use my original Philco volume control. This would result in a documented combination for the code 123.

Does anyone have a donor chassis - I would also purchase a code 123 chassis for parts as long as it had the bandswitch.

Philco issued a notice with replacement bandswitches which said:

Volume control, A.C and Wave Band Switch Changes

Models 19-128, 89-123

When replacing old type wave band switch, part #42-1002, which also operates A.C. switch for power supply, it will be necessary to use new volume control #33-5004. This control has the A.C. switch mounted at back of control housing and operates thru the control shaft.

New wave band switch part #42-1123 can be installed very easily by removing the two leads from contact terminals on each side of housing and connect as illustrated above. (I can scan the sketch if necessary, but it shouldn't be.)

This wave switch, part # 42-1123, and volume control part #33-5004 will be substituted for the following wave switches.

Part# 42-1012---42-1017---42-1002
