Electrolytic Cap in 42-360
#1

I'm re-capping a 42-360 and I have a question re. one of the capacitors.
According to the schematic and specification, there is a dual capacitor 8mfd/8mfd @ 400 volts. However, the capacitor in the radio is an 8mfd/16mfd @ 400 volts. I realize that it could have been changed at some previous time -- however it's a Philco part and the soldering on the wires looks original. Wondering if any of you have had similar experiences and if anyone knows if a production change may have been made to the model.

Thanks

I looked at the production changes sheet for 1942 Philco models, and I did not see any changes in the electrolytics for the 42-360. So I would go with the original. Well, actually, I would replace both with 10 uF, 450 volt capacitors since 10 uF is easier to find than 8 uF.

The dual electrolytic in your set was probably replaced decades ago, and the service tech probably used what he had in stock, which was a dual 8 and 16 uF cap.

Thank you Ron.
That's what I suspected. I was actually able to get 8mfd caps from wjoe so I have the parts for an exact replacement. I was also able to get two 6mfds so that I could construct a 12mfd to replace the other electrolytic in the unit.

I'll post back once I get this puppy up and running. I learned from posts on this forum that I also need to swap the caps inside the bakelite block (didn't realize there were caps in there). I also read posts about the rubber coated wires. I only saw one deteriorated wire -- others are not flaking. Is it necessary to replace them if they're not cracked or flaking?

Thanks again!

Hi Ira.
If only the one wire has deteriorated then I would just deal with it and call it a day. The others will expire eventually but if they've made it this far there is no urgent need to replace them. Do go thru and separate any that may be crossing or touching the chassis. Sometimes they tend to stick together during the deterioration process and that's often where the shorts occur.

Thank you.

Agree, but If it were my set I would replace both sections with fresh 10 MF 450 VDC caps. And I would add a fuse, 1 amp woud be OK. Just in case you fall asleep whilst t he radio is playing.
