Just acquired Philco 70
#1

I just picked up a model 70. Date on bottom of the cabinet says "Aug '31".

This is my first radio like this. It has been re-capped already I found out after taking out the chassis.

One bad tube (47 output). Has 24's not 24A's. All tubes are globe tubes, look to be pretty original, most are Philco tubes.

Cabinet in pretty good shape. I'll post pictures soon.

I did notice the tuning cap rubber grommets are shot, will replace with repros.

I did power it up on the variac, got sound, something is intermittent though, have to trace that down.

Any words of wisdom on these radios?

One more for the collection!

1. Check the re-cap. Never trust anyone unless you know the person and the reputation.
2. Check the resistors.
3. Check the tubes.
4. Inspect the wiring etc.
5. See if the tone control has been re-stuffed and re-wired.
6. Power up, measure voltages.
7. If works, align.
