my Precision 10-12 arrived today
#1

My Precision 10-12 arrived today. It is the model in the metal counter top cabinet, which I have not seen nearly as often as the one in the wooden box. Is it rarer ? I am looking forward to going right through it. I have heard they are an excellent tester, and I have the manual.

Is it a transconductance tester? If yes good, if not, unless you collect them, my personal favourite is Hickok, any from 5xx to 800 series.
(I wanted 539 but settled for 600A, an excellent tester for a radio repair).

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Radiomuseum says, "The Series 10-12 Electronamic Tube-Master is simple push button, master-lever type operated Vacuum tube and battery tester, incorporating the Electronamic Master tube testing circuit, designed by Precision engineers to indicate the overall performance merit of a vacuum tube in only one direct meter reading. ", and, judging by the schematic, http://www.antiqueradio.org/art/Precisio...ematic.jpg  , I would say it will do all I need it to. If you notice, it has the headphone connection for noise test, as well as all the short and transconductance tests.

Oh, and, if anybody needs the manual for this model, or the 10-15, which is the same manual, here is a link to the PDF of it http://sh1.webring.com/people/gc/cghwort...p_Inst.pdf

Nice unit, I'd never seen one in the metal cabinet.  Make sure the metal cabinet is isolated.   Icon_thumbup

Yup, gonna swap the old 2 wire cord for a 3 wire, and ground the cabinet too.

Been looking all over the net for another 10-12 in a metal case. Haven't found one yet. It am sure it is a factory job. It must not be common. It obviously has had some plates removed that may have been ID of some sort. It may have been surplus, military or industrial, but there are no markings left to know. If anybody knows, let me know. I see 10-15s in metal, but they are quite different, the case looks different too.

The 1950 Presision catalog lists the model 10-12C as the heavy gauge steel counter cabinet for $106.50. The 10-12P is the closed portable in the wood case and the model 10-12 PM is the panel mount. The 10-15 is the vertical counter model with the 9" meter, havent seen many of those, $143.50 on the Oct 1950 price list.

The 10-12 features "Electronamic" tests. It is actually an emission tester, but it's a darn good one. I have a 10-12. I've never been able to find documentation of the calibration process, or anything from the factory, so I've never messed with it, but it tracks well with my CALIBRATED Hickok testers. I use a TV-7 to check tubes. I even have a spare TV-7. I have around 30 testers, most of them Hickoks or military testers. If you can find one, replace the 5Y3 with a 6087.
