37-623B
#1

I have a friend who has a nice cabinet for this model. However it's a battery powered set and he would like to find a similar 1937 Philco chassis to put in the cabinet that runs on AC. Would a 37-640B chassis fit in a 623 cabinet or which model(s) would work?

Is it a complete 37-623B or just the cabinet from same? If it has the chassis and speaker with it I think I would just restore the set as is, and build a power supply for it. I'm not sure whether a 37-640B chassis would fit in the cabinet or not, the 37-640 has seven tubes and a power transformer, get someone who has one to measure it.

No I think he just has the empty cabinet. He said it's in beautiful shape so I think he may be better off trying to find another 37-623B with a bad cabinet and steal the chassis and speaker from it. I suspect there is something different between the 640 and 623 size wise. He may be forced to build a power supply or get an ARBE III. I thought perhaps Ron or someone may have encountered those two models over the years for comparison sake.

oops, I thought I answered this this morning...still half asleep, I guess... Icon_crazy

A 37-623B cabinet is the same as a 37-620B cabinet.

As for physical size of chassis, when considering AC-only chassis, the following will fit:

37-610, 37-620, 37-630, 37-640, 38-610, 38-620, 38-630

The 37-640 is indeed the same physical size as the 37-630, 37-620, etc. It does use seven tubes, but everything is crammed into a smallish chassis. I have a 37-640 chassis in my 38-624T Big Bullet cabinet, it fits just fine.

D'oh! Turns out he has an empty 37-623 CONSOLE cabinet, not a tombstone. I'm sure the chassis' you listed will fit, but now to figure out if he needs an 8" or 10.5" speaker to go with it?

The 37-623J (console) used an HR-12 speaker which is 10-1/2 inches. So...you know that you will need a suitable 10.5" speaker to go with whichever chassis you install.

Thanks, Ron. That looked like what it needed based on your spreadsheet. Just wanted to make sure. Will see what I can find at the WARCI meet tomorrow morning.
