Capacitor usage
#1

can you use a metallized polypropylene film capacitor in place of a  electrolytic capacitor?  The metallized polypropylene film capacitor does not have a + or -.  Would it make a difference how it would be hooked in to the circuit.  I am working on a 37-116. I am new at this and to the Phorum and hope my question is ok.

Sure, you can use a film cap instead of an electrolytic. In fact I would recommend it for the first filter after the rectifier. The 4 or 8 uF electrolytics available today are not rated for the high ripple current of a vintage radio power supply, especially a big one like a 116 and will have a short life.

The film cap is non-polarized so you can connect it either way

Thanks for the info. I had ordered the metallized polypropylene film capacitor from antique radio and was about to return them because I did not know you could use metallized polypropylene film capacitors in place of electrolytic caps that had to be installed with a plus or minus connection.

Dan Double conversion is using two IF converters instead of one. This improves the image response. morzh — 07:15 PM
