40-216 restoration questions
#61

I try not to touch these at all, and when I find the insulation is cracked, if it is not crumbling badly, I just put heatshrinkable tubing over.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Does anyone sell new bushings for the tuner?

They look similar to renovatedradios "t01" part for Hippo radio but may not be as long. It's the closest I can find so may just have to try.

Measure the old one carefully, and compare to Ed's (Renovated Radios) measurements for T01. You can always cut off excess rubber, but you can't easily add more on...

There's one he sells for tuning caps for 37-116 and likes. Could just fit.

On my 116's I've used 2 rubber grommets from the hardware store per bolt/sleeve. One is 7/16" od and fits the hole in the chassis. the other is 5/16" od w/a 3/16 hole for the sleeve to fit thru. Cut the small grommet in half putting one half on top and the other on the bottom of the larger grommet.

Does this wire even show on the schematic?

Gimmick?

Yup it's a gimmick cap to add a bit of osc signal into the mixer.

Just for fun here is the stepping unit in action today.

I have the remote but am just now starting to work on it.

This video shows it in action triggered by my sig gen.

So what is the best red jewel to get these days for the On light?
#70

So restoration is complete but I am seeing one strange thing going on.

I can fire the unit up and have it set to a known freq. When the audio comes up it seems fine but then about 2 minutes later I get a POP and then it all comes up louder.

I know I have at least one weak tube.

What would make the POP and everything come up louder at the same time?

Once it's warmed up it's fine.

THoughts?
#71

More than likely one of the tubes has a slight internal short that clears as the tube gets hot.

I'll have to work on getting some replacement tubes at some point. Icon_smile
