Getting some of the ugly gone
#1

Over the last several days I've been working on a couple of bad looking Philcos. One an late '36 84B and the other is an 80B. Both needed the chassis serviced which was done also.

I was a bit surprised that Philco went to trouble to add some nice details to the cabinet on the 80B (bear in mind this was a $15 set in late 1932. Two tone finish, routed base trim, routed speaker panel, and routed front panel edge. The model 81 has the same details too. This helps show the family resemblance to the lager model 91 and other Clyde Sutter designed cabinets. The 84B dropped a lot of the routing and just had the edge and opening cut with bandsaw leaving just a flat edge.

Terry;
  The grilles in those model 84s are probably routed to, if not then then used some 1930s version of a RotoZip to cut them. You can tell by the rounded out corners that they used a rotary tool and a jig to cut them, but by then the molded edges around speaker grilles cutouts that sets like the 80 and 81 had were going out of fashion in favor of ones with a 90 degree edge.
