Started the restore on my Philco 40-180.
#1

Got it up on the bench, there's a lot more dings in it that I thought. But still workable. The whole top center , and face plate some one had tried to take out by removing some screws, but never replaced them. It actually came off pretty easy. Now I noticed what looks like a plastic plate that went from one side to the other with 2 screws on each side. The middle is missing just the corners are left. Does anyone know what that was? Here's a picture:

Also the veneer on both sides of the speaker are in pretty bad shape I may have to replace quite a bit of it.

What do you think, should I try to just replace the bad parts, or replace the whole strip?

I used a stripper to remove the lacquer, that worked pretty good, just a little sanding. Had the face plate, and both sides of the face plate plus the speaker bars, removed that made it a lot easier. I'm down to the two veneer strips on both sides of the speaker. Still haven't decided if I will try to repair the strips, or replace them.

Can someone tell me if the veneer strips on both sides of the speaker is zebrawood?

I have to replace some veneer on both sides of the speaker, I think it's zebrawood, but don't know for sure, can someone confirm.

I would go to the Albert Constantine's website. and have a look at their veneer gallery to compare it with what they have. I'm guessing it's zebrano, or zebrawood, but it may be may be something like orientalwood. I would also have a look at what they have for eucalyptus veneer which can look similar sometimes. Unless someone has an original ad describing the cabinet, and what veneers were used, we can only make an educated guess.

I HAD to replace both strips on my 40-180. Haven’t completed the job yet, hope to finish tomorrow and will post a picture of the completed cabinet. I used rosewood veneer to replace what few pieces of the original I had. Put some Clear Sanding Seal on the veneer after gluing it to the substrate. Looks pretty good to me. Will post picture soon.

Russ;
  It's hard to tell sometimes, it may just be a case of the cabinet being sun bleached, the grain pattern is very close though, maybe if he chisels some off and takes a look at the underside? However to me it looks a bit like Eucalyptus. I also don't think it's a type of rosewood, that stuff has wider dark portions to the grain, and it's more on the red side.

The cabinet is all ready to seal, just have to do something with that veneer, been looking at different types, trying to figure out what to use. The other problem I'd the original the grain goes on an angle, so to replace the whole strip would take a fairly large strip. I think I have decided to replace both strips, they are both in pretty bad shape.

Yes, replace both since they are supposed to be book matched - so you will need to consecutive pieces, like the one in my picture, to cut them from.
