Philco 80jr, Calling it done!
#1

First radio restoration in years.
Over 45 years ago went to the dump with a neighbor, saw a Philco cathedral radio sitting there on a pile of old electronics parts, took it home and with the help of my uncle who worked on radios in the 30's/ 40's, got it up and running.
Recently saw this model 80jr radio on craigslist and thought it would be fun to get back into this hobby, didnt realize what I was getting into LOL!

For this cabinet I used the following Mohawk lacquers:
Heavy Body Sanding Sealer M102-0491
Ultra Classic Toner Medium Brown Walnut M100-0207 for the main cabinet
Ultra Classic Toner Light Walnut/ Colonial Maple M100-0352 for the face inner section
Tamiya Spray Black #TS-14 for the line between the light and medium walnut on the front face.
Tone Finish Clear Semi-Gloss M102-0419 for the final clear finish.

I had read on this forum to use the Ultra Classic Toner Perfect Brown for the main cabinet and Medium Brown Walnut M100-0207 for the front face light section, but I found this was too dark for the front light section. So I sanded it off, and used Ultra Classic Toner Light Walnut/ Colonial Maple M100-0352 for the face inner section, but left the sides that meet the grill cloth Medium Brown Walnut, makes for a nice 3d effect that maches the main cabinet color of Medium Brown Walnut.

Is that the original grill cloth? If not, where did you get it?

I get mine at https://www.richmonddesignsinc.com/

That grill cloth is a good match to that used in the Majestic 90 console and the Westinghouse Columnair.

But we cant be picky now-days. Lot better than somebody's spandex - yes this was common in the 80's.

Thanks guys,
Got the Herringbone grill cloth off of ebay.

It looks a lot like the original that was on the radio.

That is the same guy that Bob mentioned.

thanks.  My 80 jr. has the original but it is a bit shabby.  That cloth looks to be somewhat close to the original and would brighten up the front of my radio a bit.

Very nice attention to detail!
