17 Chassis
#1

I picked up a 17 chassis Code 121 a few days ago and I'm wondering what I should do with it. The chassis appears complete, with the power cord and some other connecting wires having been replaced. There's no cabinet, but there is a small speaker. All tubes are present. It's a beast!

What would you do with it?

Hi and welcome!
Hmmmm model 17. Yes it is beastly. If it has an eight inch speaker it would be a model 17B, like this one   http://philcoradio.com/gallery2/1933b/#Model_17B
What to do ? Well you could hunt down a cabinet and rebuild the set. Looks to use the same cabinet as the 91B and they do turn up pretty regularly. The 17's and 43's not so much.
You could drop Steve a note and he could build one you for.

I would restore the chassis but that's me.  If you are asking how to go about restoring .... we can point you to some things to read and review before you get started.  For example: https://www.antiqueradio.org/begin.htm and read through some of the restoration threads on this forum.

You can start a thread in the Electronic Restoration section to ask questions as you go during your restoration.

The Steve that Terry mentions is Steve Davis see: http://www.philcoradio.com/davis.htm

To see the cabinet that it goes with go to the following link. There are several 17 cabinets there. http://philcoradio.com/gallery2/1933b/#Model_17B

As Terry said if the speaker is 8 inches, this would be a 17B. However, the only cathedral cabinet the 17 chassis will fit is the 17B. The chassis will fit in a 16B cathedral cabinet but the dial is smaller and will not align with the opening properly.

Steve,
I have two questions. Is the 17B front panel removable from the inside like the 70 or 90B?
Is the 91B cab the same as the 17B? Looks like the dial escutcheon is the same.

The 17B front panel is removable as with all the "Clyde Shuler" style cabinets. The 17B cabinet is about 1/2 inch wider than a 91B cabinet. The 16B and the 17B cabinets are the same width and depth but the 16B is taller and has a larger dial opening. The 17B cabinet is the only cathedral cabinet that will work with a 17 chassis.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, it must be a 17B. Although I have modest soldering skills, it would be interesting to do a restoration on this, and wow, those cabinets are gorgeous.
