40-180 Socket
#1

One of the sockets on my 40-180 radio is missing the metal "conduits". Picture attached.

It looks like the socket still has the original rivets holding it in place. Between that and the wiring inside, I would prefer not to replace the socket. It is the 7J7 plug.

Is there anything like inserts that could be added that would work instead of replacing the socket?

I don't know what the wire is for. It is solder to one of the posts on the socket.

Note from site admin: Sorry, but the photos which were attached to this post are no longer available.

Something's very wrong here. The socket looks OK to me, maybe it needs cleaning or retentioning of the contacts, and the grid cap connector could also be cleaned up. Check to see which tube is correct here, I don't think it is a 7J7.

In any case, it wouldn't be such a chore to replace the socket if you want to, just take a few more pictures, and make sure you get it right.

You have an octal socket and a lead for a grid cap, which means your set falls under a production change in which the 7J7 was replaced with a 6J8G. The 6J8G has an octal base, requiring an octal socket. The pinout of the 6J8G is different from the 7J7, but the two tubes are electrically identical.

So don't go crimping those tube pin contacts...a loctal tube won't fit here.

So if I purchase a 6J8G tube, it should fit/work?

... and a grip cap?
#6

Ok, i've done a little research since the last post. Is the grid cap is the metal piece on the top of the tube?
#7

Yes, on top of the 6J8G. The 7J7 does not have a grid cap on top of the tube, but the 6J8G does.

"...production change in which the 7J7 was replaced with a 6J8G"

Is this type of change written down anywhere? I've got another tube that isn't fitting right. It would be good to know if there was more changes from the basic wiring diagram I have.

In that case, I suggest you contact Chuck Schwark and purchase a copy of the complete factory service data for your 40-180.

http://www.philcorepairbench.com/schematics.htm

The package of data you receive from Chuck will contain all factory production changes as well as an enlarged (11" x 17") schematic, parts list, etc. Well worth the minimal cost.
