Need to take out the knobs of the tuning dial of a PHILCO RADIO Model 38-10
#1

Dear Colleagues

I am in a job of carying out a routine maintenance of my old Philco Radio Model 38-10. To get access to the components  (vacuum tubes, capacitors, tuning dial etc)   we need to  take out the complete chassis from the cabinet and it is necessary to take out all the knobs. The band selection, the volume and the tone Knobs were taken out very easily but I am experiencing some difficulties in taking off the tuning knob that moves the tuning dial. This is a double knob one outer knob for a coarse adjustment and an inner knob for a fine adjustment of the tuning.

Do the knobs be pulled out simultaneously or separately ? Due to a long time since the last preventive maintenance intervention, the knobs seem to be glued together and I am afraid to use a big force to pull them out that could damage the plastic dial that is very fragile.

Any tip on how to pull these knobs safely will be most appreciated.

Thanks to all in advance ! I will try to post a photo of the radio enclosed to this message.

You take the big outer knob with the thumb and the index finger, wedging them between the knob and the cabinet, and pull. Both knobs will come off.
Stand right in front, so if the smaller knob flies out, you stop it with your gut.
Preferably standing on a soft floor, so if it falls, it does not break.
Sometimes it requires some effort, but it is rarely too large.

That's your gut, right Mike?

Sure, whose else....i usually get it against the workbench, so if something flies towards me, it will stop, having lost the energy by bumping against my belly

Just don't pry it with anything, you will dent the cabinet.
Use hands. Whatever you use to pull, the thumb and index of the same hand, or the indexes and middles of both hands - position them more or less diametrically and pull, in the former case wedging the fingers between the knob and the panel, or in the latter case using the knuckles as fulcrums against the front panel, close to the knob.
