Philco 60, open oscillator coil
#1

I have the Model 60B, 1935 (July 1934) version of the model 60 as shown at http://www.philcoradio.com/tech/60evol.htm . Circuit diagram is also at this reference. The secondary coil (3.4 ohm on the circuit diagram) is open. I took a close look at the coil and cannot see a break but I have not unwound it yet. The wire is a very small gauge. I have some 30 gauge wire which is larger than the wire on the existing coil and was wondering if I can rewind the coil using this wire as long as I keep the number of turns the same. Any suggestions regarding rewinding or other possible fixes would be appreciated.

Try here, Ron has certainly worked out well for me.

Should be fine with the 30GA wire . Is important to wind in the same direction and number of turns.

The 3.5 ohm section is actually the primary. Typically bad, it is wound over the secondary with a thin insulator made of a nitrocellulose material. This stuff breaks down over the decades, causing the wire to corrode (turn green) and fail. In its worst cases it also attacks the secondary, rendering the entire coil bad.
