Help Philco 37-84 paint restore
#1

Hello, friends.
I have a Philco 37-84. and would like to restore chipped the front of cabinet. The original lines and shapes of the front are basically a paper decal that has a woodgrain printed on it
How could restore and preserve the paint lines and different shades of color originals?
Here you can see the front of my radio

Looks like this one is marginal as far as the finish. Didn't see sides yet. If structural is OK and chassis is restorable, striping and toned laquer might be OK. If original had paper burl, that's another story. Nothing says you can't strip, scrape and put new veneer but when eactly does a restoration turn into a crusade?

If that is model 37-84 (which it appears to be), you have faux finish. If you strip it, it's gone because it's paper. You won't be able to bring it back and appearance will be entirely different. But refinished will probably be better looking than it is now.

Hi Carlos and welcome to the Phourm!!
Well if you have a lot of patients and are good with colors or know someone that is it's doable. I did a 37-84 a number of years ago. Mix up a few shades of brown. One that favors the red one that favor the yellow and one that is almost black. You will need some yellow to match the stripes. Apply paint as needed with whatever gives you the best results. This maybe a fine brush for the pin stripe to putting some brown on a crumpled plastic bag to give a non repeating pattern with the different shades of brown. Would definitely practice on a scrap of wood or a paper plate till you get some colors and patterns that you like. Once you apply all of the colors let dry and then cover with clear lacquer.
Easy right!! http://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthread...hotofinish

There are number of other things you could do, you could replace it with real veneer and marquetry, but they is a bit tedious if you haven't worked with veneer before. The quick and dirty way is to use tone spray and create stripes, but the wood underneath has no grain so you will have different shades of brown grainless wood instead of white grainless wood. Yet another method is to copy what John "badrestorer" did with a 37-610 on the other forum, he used acrylic paint and recreated a faux grain on the front panel. The stuff that used to be on these was a sort of large decal like they used to use on car dashboards in 1940s cars, it's a form of paint product, so to recreate it using paint isn't such a bad idea.

This is my first Philco and would like to restore it as it deserves. I know of restoration electronics but not cosmetic restoration.
I read in another thread that was said of a photo copy of the front. I think it may be a good idea. With help vustra am sure I will get my first Philco restore.
Regards and thanks to all,
Carlos
