Veneer repair and finish advice for Philco 14MX
#16

Any body have an educated guess as to what color toning lacquer would reproduce the original finish?

On which part of the cabinet? Looks like three or four different colors were used on various parts of the cabinet...

Oh yeah, that would help. The sides and two front panels that are mahogany. I noticed that the Mohawk products have a red tinted mahogany and a brown mahogany. The colors on the web page were hard to distinguish to my eye.

The top and front pieces are black. So that's easy. The center where the escutcheon sits is some sort of faux burl. The burl is in good enough shape that I think a good cleaning will suffice. The top is kind of rough. The veneer or plywood is very cracked and the very top layer is peeling. I will probably re veneer it with something. Shouldn't matter too much what as it is painted black. The thin strips of lighter wood I will mask off when I re paint the black.

Lots of loose veneer and de laminating plywood. Must have sat a while in a damp basement, barn or garage. Another season or two and this thing would have probably been toast.

I'll post a closer photo of the two front mahogany strips later. One side still in original finish and the other sanded down to the wood.

Bottom of chassis. An interesting stamping in the wood which says "Philco plant 25" There is something else below the 25, but it has been partially cut off and is illegible.

It looks like they used real veneer in the control panel after all, you can see by the unfinished edge at the top and sides.
