Hello All: First Time User! Help with 37-84
#1

Hello! I am very happy to be hear as I have always admired vintage radios. My wife and I recently bought our first home so I actually have ROOM to store one Icon_smile I recently purchased (on Sunday) a Philco 37-84 for $32.00 at an antique store. I am wanting to make it original as possible but I can't spend a fortune (I am a teacher, ha). Can you please take a look at the two photos below and tell me what is "not correct" about it? I know the dial was handmade.. Looking at this model online, I see dozens of variations and have no clue if mine is correct or not in terms of the knobs/color. Thanks SO much and, again, I am So glad to be here Icon_smile
Toby

This photo in the PhilcoRadio gallery http://www.philcoradio.com/gallery/1937a.htm#l is original I believe. Some of the more experienced folks will likely chime in on this.

Thanks so much Klondike! GREAT image gallery! I was just looking at my photos and have No idea why they were inserted horizontally ;( Thanks again for the reply!

Looks like finish on the front is good don't strip or sand it or I will come off and be plain white wood.

you can get a new dial here http://www.oldradioparts.net/dials_intro.html
and new knobs at http://www.renovatedradios.com/parts.html#knobs
just scroll down to the philco hex knobs

maybe someone else can tell you if the correct grill cloth can be found if not what is in the radio was used in some 37 models.

Vintner thank you very much! So it did come with the hex knobs when it was new? I will check those sites out. Thanks again!

In terms of what the usual value is... Is $32 a bit high or just right for this radio? (For future reference). Thanks again!

I think that $32 is probably about right given the situation with the dial and knobs. You can also find used original knobs on a certain auction site, or post an ad in the wanted section for them. Radio Daze also sell repro Hex knobs as does Larry Bordonaro here:

http://www.antiqueradioknobs.com/partlistings.html

I purchased a set of hex knobs from him about five years ago, the only drawback is that most reproduction Philco hex knobs have set screws for some reason even though many of the other repro knobs do not and the originals did not.

I believe klondike's link to the gallery shows originality but I once owned this 37-84 with a different cloth which I believe was original also. Either one would be fine IMHO.

Toby, I believe you did quite well on the price, particularly without having it shipped to you. Enjoy it and the restoration. Don't tell your wife but I suspect like most of us, when it is playing you will be looking for more radios. I find it a much cheaper hobby than many and very enjoyable. How many rounds of golf could you buy for that price? And think that radio will be with you for a long time. Great hobby.

I've seen that version of the 37-84B with both types of cloth - the 1935-37 chevron or "V" pattern, and the diamond pattern as in Art's. I used to think they should all use the diamond pattern, but I have since seen enough of them with the "V" cloth that I now agree with Art in that either is correct.
