Philco 48-482 (sort of)

Here are some pics of my latest acquisition. PLEASE make sure the radio is bolted into the cabinet before shipping. Parts, anyone??

Ouch!!! Is kinda of a heavy set.

Should get 100% back with a few polite emails if shipped, and is worth the effort.

That sucks. I agree with Code... 100% refund. I bought a bakelite Zenith that got destroyed in shipping. The guy used about four sheets of newspaper for packing material. I had to go through Ebay, and it took two weeks, but I got my money back.

Too bad. They are a nice radio, the only one I have in my collection with FM. I have 2 of them.

I have another one also which has been redone but the FM is beyond repair, so I've been told. I purchased this one just in case the chassis is in better condition, which it may be. Seller was very agreeable and understanding. I really believe that he was unaware as to how these are attached inside. The radio was packed very well but there is no substitute for attaching the chassis to the cabinet. I do like this style/year radio not only because of the FM but also the push button feature.

Very disheartening when that happens. Was it shipped UPS? I had a metal cabinet Atwater Kent shipped to me once that was double boxed, with egg crate foam all around the set and all around the inside box and they STILL managed to dislodge every tube and dent the corner of the cabinet. I swear they must drop their packages out a 6 story window before loading them on the truck.

Or just throw them over the fence:

Yeah, when it's all over sure one of us scavengers would be interested in the remains. UPS and USPS usually takes your word about extent of damage even if not insured. Tact, time, and follow through generally prevails.

Hi All;
I can't say for sure from the pictures, But the Chassis looks like it is Ok.. Just putting the Cabinet back together, glueing the right pieces back together.. So, it might not be a total loss..
THANK YOU marty

USPS might even give you a great deal of sympathy, but they aren't going to pay for a radio they crush if it is not insured. I know this to be true first hand.

I have one as well and the nice part is that cabinet is very solid wood. Other than the front which is a photofinish, the rest is real solid wood. Tough getting the FM working had many problems and is still not perfect. The push buttons, some time work and some time not. Very nice looking radio.

I just like the style and quality of the cabinet, the 3 bands, push buttons, etc. I much prefer this style over the AM/FM offering for 1949 (49-909) but at least the FM is working on my '49.

I had forgotten that the front panel is fake. I would not call it Photo Finish in the traditional Philco sense. Its grain and color are painted on and not too hard to recreate:

The USPS automatically insures it's packages up to $100, anything above that you have to pay extra for. UPS will tell you to pound sand even if you do buy insurance, do NOT do any business with them. I'm not 100% sure but I think that Radio Daze may have a repro glass for this model, the cabinet looks like it fared pretty well.
