37-690 questions
#1

What bulb number does a 37-690 use for the flood lamps. The parts list only shows the complete assembly PN 38-8210 all 4 or 39-7937 single so the cross reference here http://www.philcorepairbench.com/lamps.htm can not be used.

Has anyone ever seen the speaker baffles used on a 37-690? Better yet have pictures and or dimensions, make up of the parts used.

What chassis washers and RF sub chassis rubber mounts are used?
I see no mention of them in the parts list and the descriptions here
http://www.renovatedradios.com/parts.html are too weak to trust.

Thanks

Bill

Nevermind. I see you have a 37-690, not a 38-690.

Hi

Use a Type 55 bulb for the main dial lamp; four Type 44 bulbs for the Magnetic Tuning lamps.

Speaker baffles? Can you be more specific? Are you referring to the wooden cone placed in front of the woofer? Or perhaps are you referring to the set's Acoustic Clarifiers (called passive radiators today)?

For the RF unit, you want a set of three of Renovated Radios' part number PHG-RF. Part GPH-1 for the chassis support washers.

That bulb setup looks like a safe bet. If the flood lamps were not 55's using them would draw way too much current. The 37-690 I'm working on has 2 55's and 2 44's for the flood lamps now.

By looking at the parts list I get the idea there was some type of baffle system that passively coupled the acoustic clarifiers to the woofer. My father claims they had such a setup. See PN's 24045,16284,27-8572-A etc. My father has 2 37-690's and nether one has such a device.
To me the acoustic clarifiers would do near nothing without some such device.

The wood baffles you refer to are merely flat pieces of wood behind the grille cloth, and in front of the speakers. They only have holes in them large enough for the speakers and clarifiers. 27-8572-A is the cardboard upon which the grille cloth is mounted.

The ONLY extra thing in a 37-690, or 38-690 for that matter, is the solid wooden cone mounted directly in front of the woofer.

The merits of passive radiators in an unsealed speaker chamber have been hotly debated for some time now. All I can tell you is, when I owned High Fidelity Philcos, when I sat in front of them and placed one ear next to one of them, I could hear them; yes, even though the cabinet was NOT sealed.

I went to install the RF subchasis grommets PN PHG-RF but they do not fit.
The step is 7/8 but a 37-690 needs the step to be approx 3/4.

Sorry to hear they did not fit.

Have you discussed this problem with Ed (Blacksmith) at Renovated Radios?

I sent him an email but have not gotten a reply yet. If worse comes to worse I think I can modify the ones I ordered to fit.

Sounds good.

I think that he is a lot like me when it comes to e-mail...can't always answer right away but will when time allows.

Ed got back to me and he has confirmed the problem on this 38-690. He is going to produce the correct grommets for the 37/38-690's and have them ready in a week or so. So cool days!!
