Radiola 18
#1

Could someone please let me know where the antenna hooks up to on a radiola 18 ar936? I finally received the ux280 tube and everything powers up but I don't even hear a chirp. I'm about ready to throw the towel in on this thing

There should be a marked antenna post somewhere on the thing. Also, look at the back of the cabinet, might be marked 'ANT' near a hole on the back to give you a clue.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Radiola 18's don't have antenna posts. They have two wires coming out from the right hand side of the main chassis. These connect directly to the chassis ground and to the input of the 1st RF amp with a resistor across them. If I get a chance, I'll take a pic of one of my chassis' later today and post it for you.

I was remembering a different TRF chassis (a Steinite, I believe). It is much the same, however, with the 18 chassis. The antenna and ground wires come in on the far left side of the chassis, and run up to connect into the volume control. See pics below:

Thank you very much. Those definitely help. The schematic I found had the speaker wired up to there!

Eek... the speaker plugs into the two pin jacks on the power supply chassis.

Here's an accurate schematic:

Note it shows both the DC (top) version and the AC (bottom) version. You'll see the volume control labeled as such on the DC version, on the AC version it's in the same place but not labeled.

The following document might help you also, it has voltages, component values, and tips on the 18:

Are those jacks hopefully 3.5mm like headphone jacks or a bit bigger?
#9

Those are for pin jacks, like they used on old headphones and speakers. Mouser sells them:

So does Radiodaze as the SPC-TIP:

Thanks Brenda! She fired right up and gave a great sound! Have to do some work on the volume control though. Also thanks John, I ordered a set!

Goes to show you how long it's been since I have looked at a Radiola 17 or 18. Used to be common as dirt around here.

No matter where you go, there you are.
