Philco Flying Wedge 48-230
#1

I bought this thinking about restoring it and then selling it on eBay, but now I like it too much and will likely keep it. I noticed some electrolytic caps were installed that differ from the schematic. Should I go back and replace what the schematic shows, or use similar values to the replacements?

Also wondering if I did want to sell it down the road..is it more valuable as restored and working or left in it's original condition?

Welcome to the Phorum!!
The exact values of the electrolytics are not critical but if I were restoring it I would use the values that were in the schematic and stuff them into the original electrolytic container if its still there. You should also change out the paper capacitors and check the resistors and replace if they have drifted more than 20% above their spec.

As to value I'll let others with more ebay seller experience comment

OK, good. That's pretty much what I thought as well. Thanks!

Well, after recapping and checking/changing resistors, tubes and wiring...no stations. A little background noise, but no static or anything. Checked tube voltages, which were a little high and low here and there. I get hum from touching center lug of volume knob. I checked the wiring on the 3 coils, and they looked OK. What else can I do? I don't have a signal generator.

The next thing to check would be the oscillator. Place a working radio tuned to clear spot on the dial around 1450. Now, tune the 48-230 to around 1000 and rock the dial. If your oscillator is working, you should be able to hear it in the working radio.

Have you checked you tubes?
#7

Yes, I checked the tubes, swapped tubes, measured voltage. I'm going to clean the sprockets and check that all pins are making contact next.

Steve-when you say rock the dial do you mean tune it up and down slightly?
#8

I am sure there are more than three coils in there. Check them all.

Yes, Tune the 48-230 a little each direction. You should hear a change in the other radio.

IF in, IF out and Osc coils. 3 there and nothing else. I'll run tests when I get home today.
#11

Steve-thanks for that oscillator test. It worked! I swapped the 2 IF coils from a working Philco and it still has no sound. Power section, audio, IF, Osc all work but why no stations?

If you have a schematic that you can post, it might help us find the problem.

OK, I attached a 2 sheet and then a blow up of the schematic. Thanks!

Do you have a signal generator?

No signal generator. That would make it too easy, wouldn't it!
