Philco 66 Restoration Chronicles
#31

No rush...Kutztown is more than a month away.
#32

Well Well Well, I took out my Nemesis 66 (or should I say Mikes)
This thing has been a severe pain in the arse!

First I redo the cabinet carefully to leave the good original face and a stripper can leaks all over it, then I redo the entire cabinet to add the wrong logo, Now on the third try I have tiny bits of seeping but I think those will sand out and clear will remove the rest.

I re-taped her, stripped just the grill, untaped, cleaned, re-re-taped and toned today. The finish is a bit foggy due to the humidity so I will let it sit a while before clearing..... Again

I have a few decals so I will have to post pics and you guys can tell me which is right. Stoopit decal looked right to me.

I will sand out the finish, rottenstone and oil then wax all the cabinets mid September before K-town. Then they are yours Mike!

Ron

Could you repeat this message one more time?
That has to sink in reliably.

Ok, I know, I know I have these decals but where???

Looked for a while and gave up. Had to buy them. I'm sure I'll find them now but I can always use them.

This 66 is a PITA

Oh and while at the beach Mike, I hope you step on a crab Icon_lol

I stepped on some flounders several times, funny feeling, you step on a flat bottom and it agitates and something darts away from under your foot.
And one time it was something thick and round, like a big fish, felt like something 3" thick. I squealed, I was so surprised.

Crabs....lots of those to step on.

I hate sand and the water so much. Don't know why but I do.

I think I am going to have to show you how to wax a radio Mike.
I am so worried that finishing them for the Sept. event will cause issues with crazing or cracking later on. They need more time to cure so I may just finish sand and oil them. Then in a 6 weeks you can wax them if desired.

How do you feel about that?

If ypu show me how to and tell me when to buy the wax, and you guarantee I am not getting kiked out of the house due to smell....sure.
I thought they promissed dry nice rest of August...

It's wax buddy, not sulfuric acid. No smell and no work other than applying and buffing when it dries.

I use standard Johnsons wax in the yellow can from home depot.
Shine your wood floors for practice, just not the stairs!

Good stuff and a can will last Mike 100 years unless he starts putting it on his sandwiches Icon_e_wink

If I do that I won't last 100 years.
On the other hand I won't last that long even without doing it.
#44

Well,
The decals arrived and I have successfully added it to the radio.
Clearing the cabinet now but the humidity is making the lacquer dry slow and creating a white haze. Letting the coats dry longer and then the cabinet goes into the cocoon for a few weeks.

Happy now Ron Icon_lol

Beautiful, Kirk. Sorry you had to go to the extra trouble...but you want it to be historically accurate, right?

...right?

Oh, by the way, don't forget, for white spots caused by high humidity, Mohawk's No Blush Plus is your friend. Icon_thumbup
