Philco 90- metal boxed caps
#1

Hi all...
I'm working on a Philco 90 cathedral early version (stamped May 11 1931, serial #069786)
and trying to restore the under chassis. At some point the two-cap metal box on the back of
the chassis was removed. Any suggestions on how to replicate the box, or would you just put
in restuffed paper caps and let it look like a "period" repair? I've already made a box out of an
old mustard tin, but it would survive only a cursory look before it becomes very apparent the
thing is hand made.
By the way, I've already replicated two resistors using Syl's epoxy molding technique... great
results!

Re-stuff it. Use hot glue to "clump" the caps and secure to an inside corner. I use new cloth-covered wires with same color code to bring out the leads. I save the fish paper insert too. Just carefully and S-L-O-W-L-Y unbend the tabs to eviscerate the original caps. I use "yellow" 630 volt film types for replacements.

Thanks Chuck
...guess I wasn't too clear in my first post. The cap box itself is missing,
so I have to find or make a replacement if I'm going to make this radio
look OEM. I tried modifying an old mustard tin, but am not satisfied with
my metalworking on that yet.
Another question about cap packages on the model 90: There's a single
.05uF cap, item #29, that is missing as well. Would it have been a paper cap?
...there's no evidence that any bakelite boats have been removed.

Scratch the question about cap item #29. It was indeed a boat. Icon_rolleyes
