The gift supreme for Christmas - a PHILCO
#1

[Image: http://www.philcoradio.com/images/phorum/18B_sm.jpg]

A fresh restoration of an 18B I did for myself, as a Christmas present from me...to me. Icon_biggrin

Cabinet brought back from the brink of firewood by Barry Jones.

Chassis by me. I also cleaned and polished the escutcheon and knobs.

May all of you have a very Merry Christmas and a safe, joyous and Philco-filled New Year.

It's very nice, Ron. The 18 is a good performing radio.

Thanks Steve. The chassis still has a few bugs, but I'll work them out later. It's good enough for now to listen to Christmas music on.

I've always liked Model 18 sets. In fact one of my first Philcos was an 18L lowboy, many years ago. Great radio. But the 18B takes up a lot less room. Icon_smile

Hey Brian, you're the 650 guy...why would you want a Model 18? Icon_lol

Well, the 18 is the ancestor of the 650...

I wish I had taken a frontal "before" pic. I do have a couple pics of the cabinet, from the side, showing the rippled veneer that was pulling from the cabinet. The cabinet has all new veneer on the top and sides now. Will post those photos later...

That is a very nice looking radio. What a nice Christmas gift, even if it is from yourself. Icon_smile

Ron, how about giving me some dope on Barry Jones? Where is he located?

I have a Stromberg-Carlson 145P cabinet I need to have finished. Sounds like he knows his stuff.

Doug, he's close to Ron. He did my 116B cabinet. Beautiful work I might add. His email is mrtruetone@aol.com

Hi Doug

As Brian said, Barry Jones is here in Evansville, a mile or less from me. He does good work.

Here's a few more pictures for your amusement.

As I said, I regret that I did not take a good frontal "before" shot of the cabinet.

[Image: http://www.philcoradio.com/images/phorum/before2a.jpg]

This blurry photo sort of shows the waviness of the veneer on the side.

[Image: http://www.philcoradio.com/images/phorum/after1.jpg]

From a similar angle, you see that now, all of the veneer on the top and sides is new.

[Image: http://www.philcoradio.com/images/phorum/before1a.jpg]

Back view of how the cabinet originally looked. You can see more clearly the poor condition of the veneer on top and sides.

[Image: http://www.philcoradio.com/images/phorum/after2.jpg]

Another "after" shot, from a similar angle as the one above. No, the AC cord does not look authentic. I fully intend to replace it later. I just threw that gray one on there in a hurry so I could listen to Christmas music on this radio yesterday afternoon.

Also later on, I intend to clean the top of the chassis using Etech's method. Icon_smile

And finally, a better frontal shot of this radio. It plays almost as well as it looks - it still has a bug in the 2nd detector-AVC-1st audio tube, or in this area. I'll have to chase that down later on. For now, however, it's back to the customers' radios...

I think I've figured this one out. After replacing the 75 tube for the THIRD time...it is behaving itself so far.

Last night I listened to part of the radio broadcast version of "It's A Wonderful Life" (which also featured Jimmy Stewart) on this 18B, being broadcast from WWL, New Orleans.

What is it with the type 75 tubes? When I finished my 18, it made a popping, crackling sound every few seconds. As the radio would warm up, it would get less frequent. It turned out to be the 75 tube.
The model 18 is a fantastic radio. It is a very sensitive radio. Mine will pick up stations that most of my other radios won't.
