The guy on the radio mentions Guadalcanal so that portion of the film at least is post World War Two. As far as the knobs go, the prop department may have found it like that or they may have modified it. They often change things like that for movies. I sometimes think they do it to give themselves more to do than just pulling things off shelves and placing them on sets.
