I use a torch to burn off the enamel (dont burn off the ends 
) , then clean the ends with a skotch brite pad. It is a bit of a PITA to get the ends clean. Sometimes I scrape the ends with a very sharp blade too. I also use solder flux. Hope this helps....have done this for 40 years .....
