Doing more research a Philco 40-165 uses a 6J8 instead of a 7J7. I bet that is what is intended for this 40-155, the 6J7 works but just for fun I plugged in a 6A8 and the reception was noticeable better. I'll pick up a 6J8 from the radio club this weekend, that should give even better reception. The cathode has a 0.2 uf capacitor in parallel with a 150 ohm resistor going to ground, no coil.
