Specifically no idea, but any working cartridge should respond a bit to stimulus of needle. Crystal or Ceramic cartridge more so, should give some response when hooked up to an amp. Magnetic cartridge would have pretty low resistance, and very small output compared to other types. Dried up cartridge with no output and seemingly infinite resistance is probably no longer good.
