Well, at least now I know it isn't a completely isolated problem. Did you end up rewinding the oscillator tickler coil? What size resistor is in the 36 cathode bias network? The resistance of the coil isn't a concern, your wire is thicker than the original. My bandswitch doesn't work either, it just needs to be cleaned. There isn't anything to hear up there, so I haven't gotten around to it yet.
If you go to all the trouble to replace the 36 tube socket, I would do the 'Super 89 Mod' here: http://www.philcoradio.com/notebook/supercnv.htm That ought to be even better.
Still holding out hope this is fixable, it seems like plenty of people have gotten it done. I hope the rf generator will shed some light (and other forms of radiation) on the problem.
Do you have the means of a proper alignment?
