Well I finally checked out the speaker and output transformer that I have. The speaker, is of course the wrong size for the tabletop cabinet. I was hoping to use the output transformer, but one side measures about 2 Kohns. The rest appears to be OK. Perhaps I can untapped the transformer and get lucky enough to find an end and touch up the soldering. Otherwise, I will need a transformer as well as the speaker.

Thanks,

Just an update... found the correct speaker. (Although it looks like it will need reconed.) Will be buying it from a gentleman of ARF in California. Cabinet is in the process of being ordered. Have checked all the coils and RF/if transformers (I hope) and they are all close to the right resistance. I have completed one Philco Bakelite box (power line input caps) and am starting the second one. I think in a few weeks I will have a functional 38-5B.

Thanks for the help thus far. I suspect there will be many more questions.

Speaker is in my hands. Radio recap mostly done. Audio section seems to work, but the RF/IF section does not. Some of the voltages are close and some are WAY off. I have the Riders manual. Can anyone help with the Philco manual?

Meantime Rider usually is sufficient to start working as long as the sch is there.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

Don't know if this is same as riders.

Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept this justice as a gift

Philco 38-5 update. I have audio coming thru the speaker from AM stations. Here is what I have yet to do. The cabinet is yet to ship. The speaker needs repaired. Both lights (dial indicator and shadow meter) are in need of repair. Any ideas on how to repair the Philco lamp sockets? Btw, the shadow meter is functioning. I can see the vane moving, but of course with no lamp, it is not nearly as cool.

Ron, I thought I had seen something like that. My knee jerk reaction was that my socket looks different. After a quick look, the shadow meter looked different, but I think someone had tried to fix it years ago. I think your fix will do the job.

I forgot that the female speaker connector has an issue as well. The fiber washer that holds the contacts in place is broken. It appears to be attached with a blind rivet. What can I do about that?

Thanks,

Looking for what type of bulbs to use for my dial and shadow meter lamps. Can anyone tell me? Philco number is 34-2064, but what does that mean for a regular bulb number, 44, 47, or..?

Thanks,
