1936? model 84 resistor
#31

Hi Jim,
I'm pretty sure it's grounded internally but just to be sure you can check it with an ohm meter. Usually what happens is without a gnd connect to the set the volume control doesn't have much of an effect at all. Plays loud all the time. Did you try reversing the coil winding?

Haven't gotten to the coil yet. Still have to align the set. Am
going to get the "Ron Special" ball-point pen alignment tool
made this morning. The coil should be right on--counted turns
& made very sure to wind in the correct direction. Will see
what alignment will do for the old girl first.
Any idea other than humidity---what causes the Litz wire
to corrode on the coil windings? The set was obviously not
out in a barn--chassis is in very good shape for the age of
the unit. Thanks much for your help. Jim

Well 1st off it's not Litz wire. It's just plain old 38G cotton covered stuff. There an interaction between that little clear strip and the copper that causes it to rot. Litz wire is made up from using several strands from very fine wire like 7-41 would be 7 strands of 41G wire.
Terry
ps Your very welcome enjoy doing it. It's kinda like fixing a radio with out doing the work! If it give you any trouble you know where to find me.

It reminded me of Litz wire---came off in small pieces. I suppose Litz would have
come off the coil "dead"---this wire did have some spring to it yet. Thanks again.
Jim
