GE F-96 wood repair
#1

I'm working on a F-96 and it has a chunk taken out of it.

Anyone have a better sense of wood identification than me? I'm going to try a veneer patch, but I suppose I better know what wood I'm looking for.

Has the side pulled away for the top?? The contour of the side doesn't look like it matches the top. Are you thinking of refinishing the whole cabinet or just repairing this issues?

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.
Circa 1966
Now I think I've got!

I am not an expert, but that looks like mahogany, AKA luan plywood.

Im refinishing it completely. I've reglued the loose edge to the top. I've stripped and sanded. I have some veneer samples coming.

I'm not sure how to approach the missing substrate issue.

No, It's not Luan plywood, it's one of the mahogany look a likes, sapele. or possibly quartersawn makore. G.E listed what sort of veneers they used in their advertising and I think that they liked to use one of those veneers, particularly of the ribbon striped variety, on their cabinets in the 1938 and 39 model years.

That Makore looks like a possibility.

Better strip some of the original finish off, just to make sure, G.E was like many manufacturers in that their cabinets had a tinted finish over everything to even out the variations in wood grain.
