38-39 Vibrator Power Supply Replacement
#16

Hi Guys.  Two discoveries have come to pass;  The last person to work on this radio had apparently changed the 3 volt battery polarity for the tube bias, which was causing the 1H4G audio tube to be overdriven. I corrected this and used a single CR2032 battery instead of the three poorly mounted button cells.  With that, most of the noise went away. I also purchased a solid state mosfet vibrator from PekoRF and fitted it into the Philco can. Now the radio plays quite well but needs a good long wire antenna to obtain a strong signal to overcome ambient hash noise. I aligned it as well as I could and was hoping for greater sensitivity, but it only has one IF stage, so I guess and good antenna will be necessary.  This has been a beneficial learning experience for me.  However, I may think twice before taking on another farm radio restoration!
