Unique Philco console
#1
Smile

I saw this Philco console on the local Marketplace today.  I've never see one like it before.  The bezel is very unique.  I'm sure those with more knowledge than I know what this is.

Model 14X.

I have a model 14 chassis that I listen to regularly. Would love to have the cabinet! My 14 chassis, though, has different knobs so was probably not in this cabinet style.

Or, it's a 16X with the optional bezel.

I have an 18X with that exact bezel.  Plays very good.

Very pretty radio. I see a neo-classical or maybe neo-Egyptian influence. Ancient Egypt was big in the 1920s and early '30s because of the discovery of King Tut's tomb.

Our earlier 16x uses the same woodwork, but with a different (Standard Bakelite) Escutcheon to accommodate the 5 band dial.

They are quite something. Egyptian influence, certainly, and somewhat stuck between Art Nouveau and Art Deco, in my opinion. That example is in beautiful shape and appears to have the original cloth Icon_smile

I don't hold with furniture that talks.

Thanks Mike and Ed  It was in pretty good shape when I got it but I still did a refinish and the original grill cloth was very delicately cleaned and used over.
The veneer piece along the bottom had peeled off in several locations and the bottom of one of the pillars was missing. Reveneered the strip along the bottom and made a piece for the pillar.
Turned out pretty well and sounds great. Thanks
