Philco 46-1226: Strange Volume Problem
#16

Congratulations on finding the issue, Al! Yes, it was very common for a manufacturer to use "unoccupied" pins as interconnects instead of spending $0.02 on a terminal strip. By making a wiring error and then finding and correcting it, one learns so much more about the circuit and its machinations than merely replacing parts.

I bet this set really sounds nice. (Probably doubles as a pretty good guitar amp too.)

I only have the correct connection made with a temporary jumper wire right now, so I haven't had a chance to properly evaluate the sound. But the minute or so it took to confirm the fix was promising.

Thanks again to you and morzh.

I have one remaining issue before I reinstall this in the cabinet, which is that the dial pointer doesn't move as smoothly (feel-wise) across the dial as I'd expect it to. I tried applying a thin film of SuperLube grease across the top horizontal portion of the dial that the pointer rides on, but it didn't make much of a difference. I was going to apply a tiny drop of oil to the center of the small dial string pulleys where they rotate around the shafts, however, it appears that the pulleys may be made of a phenolic rather than steel, and I'm concerned about adding oil there. Perhaps I'll start a new thread.

No - please don't.

Please read this quote from the Phorum Rules:
https://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthread.php?tid=4586

Quote:II. Multiple threads on the same subject not allowed.

When you start a thread, please keep the discussion within the same thread.

Example: "Philco 90 broken"

After you've started that thread, please do not start another thread on "Philco 90 bad resistor" if it is the same Philco 90 being discussed in the original thread. Give others a chance to respond to your questions rather than asking them again in a new thread - please be patient.

These sort of threads will be immediately deleted, to keep clutter to a minimum.

Please cooperate with management in keeping one thread in the same place rather than scattering it around.
