A Zenith 10S669
#1

I just dragged home yet another projectIcon_crazy! I found this Zenith 10S669 on Craigslist 6 miles from my home for $30!! It's in pretty good shape overall. Someone had started to refinish the cabinet but luckily didn't mess around with the faux woodgrain areas. Bad news was that the speaker had been removed and lost, but I Bought it anyway. I got home, unloaded it and jumped on Ebay and did a search for Zenith speaker. What do you know! Listed there was the exact speaker I needed for $24.95 Icon_thumbup It is also now mine!

Congratulations! I recently finished up a 10-S-669. They sound great with the P-P 6V6 output. The real bear with them is the rubber wiring. Be very careful with it. I ended up replacing 27 rubber wires in the chassis plus all 8 in the tone control harness. Make sure all the tube shields are there. I see some nicks in the photofinish, you can touch them up using colored magic markers, mostly black and brown.

This is the original finish. All I did was clean it. At the time the original style grille cloth was unavailable so I substituted.

I used to have one of these sets, but the faux finish was toast. Sounded rather good though when it was on. I finally traded it off a couple years later. Now I know where there is another, but haven't asked the guy about it yet.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Someone on the Buffalo, New York Craigslist wanted $400 for one of those, and yes the dinoc faux finish was bad, but then again someone on there thought an ancient box of propylactics was worth $500. Even though I personally like the control panel layout these brand Z sets are on just the wrong side of the line from the collectabilty standpoint of most people. Maybe it's the rubber wire, or maybe it's the extensive use of Dinoc on the cabinet faces, but for whatever reason most people stay away from them. It's kind of an odd design really, judging by the cabinet styling and that dial you would think it was a 1938-39 set not a 1942 set, but brand Z seems to have been the last holdout against slide rule dials.

I have one of those too.
All re-capped and sounds awesome.

What are the two in the photo?

That is a 12h670 zenith, and a Stewart Warner that has been electronically restored.
Both work beautifully.
