fuse for a 40-180?
#1

I would like to put a in-line fuse on my Philco 40-180. Does any one know what the current draw is for this chassis?
#2

Normally I put the inline fuse holder mounted to the chassis (Radio shack types) that are open and you simply pop the fuse in. I use 1 amp fuses and never had too much a problem with them blowing but you can figure it out by checking your voltage and seeing how many watts it is rated at. Here is a site for conversions or or you can use Watts = Amps x Volts and do the proper math. So for a 45 watt unit with 120V home voltage equals about .375 Amp. Normally you will get a surge when turning it on but a 1 amp fust would normally handle that.

Thank you for the info Icon_biggrin
can you tell me what mmfd on a cap stands
I know that mfd is for micro farad but MMFD ?
#4

MMFD = micro-microfarad.

Also seen on schematics as mmF, and on newer schematics as pF (picofarad).

Microfarad can be written MFD, MF, mF, µF or uF. All the same.

Rule of thumb:

1 pF = .000001 uF
10 pF = .00001 uF
100 pF = .0001 uF
1000 pF = .001 uF
10000 pF = .01 uF
100000 pF = 0.1 uF
1000000 pF = 1 uF

Original service bulletin for the 40-180 shows the power ratings at 60 watts, at 115 volts AC mains.

That's about 62 watts at today's average 120 volts AC. That translates to slightly over 0.5 amp of current draw. I'd use a 3/4 or 1 amp slo-blo fuse. A fast-acting (non-slow blow) fuse may nuisanse trip with turn on spikes from the power transformer.

Thank you ALL for the help Icon_biggrin
I have just one more question at this time
I have a 12uf Cap metal can that has a hole in the side of it. Are there replacements you can get just to make it look original or will I have to leave it on the chassis with a hole?
#7

Hi,
Are you sure that is a cap with a hole in it? You may be able to turn the cap sideways so the holet can't be seen, and normally we disconnect the original cap and leave it in place.

Do not use any of the old caps terminals to attach your new cap to.

Some folks restuff the old cap can. Not sure if you want to go that far or not. Otherwise mountung the new cap under the chassis will be fine.

I wonder how a hole got in the cap?

Gary.

it looks like some one pushed a hole in it
