What to use for dial cord springs
#1

I found that the 40-201 radio I acquired did not have its dial cord tension springs. I have it working using some springs from ball-point pens for now, but the tension is not as tight as it should be. Have any of you found a good source of springs to use for dial cord tensioning?

Steve and jontz;

Thanks for those links. I don't know why I did not think about McMaster Carr, I have used them in the past for aluminum tubing to make FM antennas. They also have various types of plastic that can be milled or cut to size and shape to make insulators. Black Delrin plastic makes a good insulator for outside antenna driven elements. It holds up well to weathering and sunlight.

Now I need to figure out the approximate length and diameter of spring to get for this application.

I received my order of 1 inch and 1.5 inch long by 1/8 inch OD gavanized steel springs with hooks on the ends from McMaster-Carr and some .040 inch OD black jacketed dial cord from Radio Daze. I restrung the tuning drive thumb wheel and tuning capacitor yesterday using a 1 inch spring. It worked well first try - no more slipping. No further efforts are needed as the problem is cured.

Thanks to all who have helped along the way on this restoration!

Joe
