Re-Faux (Phaux)
#1

Well Photo Phinish is always a problem, especially if you are the 2nd or 3rd "restorer" to own a radio. Seems someone has usually managed to strip off the fake finish leaving a pretty much worthless cabinet.

I have used the Faux Faux approach:

Which is real veneer, so it's fake - faux.

This morning I was reaching the bottom of a pile of radios I acquired from an accumulator. Most had just been piled, but unfortunately, this one had been stripped. So after looking at the picture on Radio Attic:

http://www.radioatticarchives.com/radio.htm?radio=2669

I was just about to make firewood of the cabinet and use the chassis for parts. But, at the last moment I decided to re-faux instead. I have done this quite a few times. Mostly, the results seem to be OK, but I usually just pass since "custom" radios are not my thing.

Well anyway, here it is. After going to the work of fauxing the dial area I didn't feel like painting it black. So that is a little different, assuming the one on RA is actually original.

It still needs a few more coats.

It probably would not have given off much heat as firewood anyway.

Both radios look very good. Can you share the process used for the faux finish on the RCA?

Great work phlogiston. If you ever have the time it would be interesting to see a step by step on how you did this.

You do absolutely stunning cabinet work Russ, I am always in awe each time you post a picture of a cabinet you've done.

Another great job Russ!!  I think there's a lot of artistic talent required to make that re-faux process look good!!!  I think if I tried it, it would look like a finger-painting  Icon_biggrin

Thanks guys.

The only real trick is when the 3rd dimension is added as with the bar between the speaker cutout and the dial. When the cut adds depth the knots and such must be 3 dimensional as well, otherwise it just does not look right. Maybe that is why the RCA original blacked that area.
