Fred,
Excellent work, encourages me to restore my 16B tombstone that is painted an ugly barn red before I obtained it for $25. How did you redo the photofinish- did you replace it with veneer? Have a couple of holes in the side of mine where someone bolted the speaker after they removed it from the front? The cabinet wood on mine is in good condition.
Also, my chassis is in very good condition and not rusted. Best, John

I don't think 16 would use photofinish...would it? I always thought a high end radio such as 16 would only use veneers.

None of the Model 16 cabinets used any photofinish.

As Mike correctly pointed out, the 16 was one of Philco's high end models and as such, its cabinets used real wood veneers, not photofinish.

My apologies... I went to the garage and looked at the beat up front panels with a flashlight and they are veneer. They are in bad condition and jumped to a conclusion that they were photofinish. You would think that I would know better
than to jump to conclusions after all these years.. Icon_redface John

Unfortunately for a high end radio Philco still went rather cheap on these, the only higher end veneer is on the raised portions on the front panel, whilst the rest of the cabinet is poplar or maple veneer sprayed with dark shading lacquer, which is often badly flaking by this time. Between the 16B cathedral and the late version of the 116B all of the other '16B cabinets were designed along those lines.
Regards
Arran
