Philco 16B from the AHRS
#1

We went down to the Annex today looking for a speaker, and I left with much more than a speaker. This 16B only cost me $20. Next weekend I'm going to replace the electroytics and cord and check all the tubes. The cabinet is in pretty tough shape, but my dad can fix that.

Cathedral or tombstone version?

It's the early version of the Tombstone. It has the toggle switch on the side for the interference control thing.

Wow $20.00 what a GREAT deal! It will be a treasure when your done with it. You do not hear of a bargain like the one you found often.
#5

Thanks. I was quite shocked when I heard how much it cost. I was also shocked at how HEAVY it is! I can't wait to get it up and running!

As found, this radio had a 5Z3 Rectifier, but the schematic says it's supposed to have an 80. I've also heard that some other versions of this chassis have a 5Z3. Which tube should I use?

Hi Dave
Double check the code # on the chassis tag to be sure you have the proper schematic. It will read code 121 or 122 ect... Either will work but the 5Z3 is rated at higher output current. And it consumes more filament current (3amps/ the 80 is 2amps). Generally the 80 or 5Y3 is used on sets with smaller audio output stages, the bigger sets and consoles w/ larger output tubes used the 5Z3 or 5U4.

The schematic on the inside of the cabinet says to use an 80 tube.

What is the big rectangular can next to the cylindrical philter cans? Other 16B's I've seen do not have this.

It looks like a capacitor to me.

We phixed this radio today. We replaced all 4 electrolytics with new 22 mfd capacitors. I have it on right now, and it sounds quite good, but it definitely needs an alignment. We will do an alignment, replace the cord, replace a few capacitors, and check the rest of the tubes next week.

Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept this justice as a gift

I went to Lowe's and bought a variety pack of O-rings to phix the tuner, but when I got it all apart, I realized that none of them phit properly. Either too big or too thin. The coarse tuning still works - sort of. I'll take some samples and try to phind the right sizes this week.

If you have code 121/122/123 this tells you exactly which o-rings to use:

The Danco o-rings can be ordered from Amazon if you don't have a local source.
