I won't be able to get to working on this 91 that I found ( see December Phinds ) until later in the spring but I had to get the chassis out of the cabinet and take a look at it. The topside is very dusty but the good news is there is only some surface rust, no sign of any critters making their home there!!

The underside is very clean and it does not look like anyone has done any repairs on it either!

The speaker is in decent shape with only a couple small tears that I should be able to fix relatively easily. I'm looking forward to working on this one!!

With a flaming hot soldering iron in one hand and a large spool of 38ga magnet wire in the other there's nothing Bob can't fix!!!!!
Have at it and have fun!

Make sure you use appropriately powerful butane torch for soldering that wire.

Oh I couldn't possibly even if I wanted to, he's got them all and then some. My fantasy does not come close to his reality.

The speaker patching went well. After looking at the photo I may have to make one more patch but I didn't notice it when taking the photo.

This radio has a run number on it, at least I think that's what this is. Looking closely at the stamp it appears it says Philco Radio on top and LAB. on the bottom.

You can see the surface rusting on the chassis in the above photo. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about that yet....
I started cleaning the dirt off the chassis with a brush and vacuum and then gave it a light GOJO on paper towel wipe down. Its going to clean up pretty well I think.

Already starting to look nice Bob!
What did you use to patch the speaker?

Thxs! I used the coffee filter with diluted elmers glue technique that I used on the 60MB earlier. SEE: http://philcoradio.com/phorum/showthread...2#pid85802

Got a little further along today by checking all the transformers and coils. I thought I was in deep doo doo when the primary on the power transformer showed open but quickly found that the ON-OFF switch was bad. Bypassed that switch and all was good as were all the other coils & transformers!!!
As I mentioned earlier, there are no added caps or resistors to the set.
I'm wondering if perhaps the ON-OFF switch went bad and the owners just put the radio aside to fix later and just never got it fixed.....perhaps to let it wait around for 84 years for me . There are some non-Philco tubes so there was at least some level of service but there are also still several globe Philco tubes in the set.
The ON-OFF switch is a mechanical lever device that toggles one of those old toggle switches. I don't think you can open those up for repair...has anyone ever fixed one? Here's a pic of it out of the set.

Bob
Is that just a single SPST switch?
I've seen a contraption on Phico model 15 sets that two of those switches mounted in such a fashion that you can turn the knob to three positions - OFF, ON LOCAL, and ON DISTANCE. Never seen one on a 91 before, however.
I suspect yours is a replacement, since it appears to only have one switch (off-on). I think all AM-only model 91 sets had a rotary switch like that used in the 50, 51, 52, 70 and 90. as well as many older Phico models.

Double conversion is using two IF converters instead of one. This improves the image response.
