Crosley 181 capacitor enquiry
#1

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Resources/do...003310.pdf

I was given a Crosley 181 from an old friend and am new to restoration and am looking for advice regarding replacing duo caps. This radio has three duo caps and I have never come across this in my brief time since I took up this hobby.

The first pic is of an .006 / .05 cap #37 and #38 on the schematic and the second pic is of #19 and #20, a .1 .1 mfd cap. Someone has replaced some of the electrolytics and other caps in the past so I can’t locate the third duo cap #13 and #14, a .02 .02 cap.

Both of the ones shown have a metal lug with one soldered to the chassis and the other soldered to a terminal strip. I don’t know the significance of this lug.

I haven’t read anything about these types of caps and hoping someone can advise me on how to properly replace these.

14 should be easy enough to find the one end is connected to pin 6 of the 2A7 or a 100k resistor that goes to pin 5 of the 2A7. 13 connects to the ant coil thru the bandswitch. Don't know that there is any special magic that happens when you put a cap inside a cap. It might have been done foe space conservation but others may have better ideas why it was done.

I think Crosley payed their draftsmen in marbles and bubble gum...

With MOST - but not all - both caps in the assembly will go to chassis ground through the mounting band. They will have one lead soldered to it. There are exceptions that can be accommodated as you "build" the new cap(s).

Here are some notes where the Crosley caps are mentioned and rebuilt:

This one in particular, I had to rebuild many of those caps:

Note that Crosley used caps made by most of the large manufactures. They were branded "Crosley" and also had the Crosley part numbers which will help in IDing the configuration. Crosley caps of that age will be marked W-XXXXX.
